With a rapidly expanding enrollment Orcas Christian School on Orcas Island in Washington State was in need of a High School and Gymnasium. As the project manager while at Lewis Architects I saw the design and construction from start to finish and was instrumental in the design of the gymnasium and multi-purpose building. After completion of the school and gymnasium the final phase was the multi-purpose building which the client wanted to reflect the form and style of an old Ivy League school.
Building Highlights:
Using a Gambrel roof on the gym helped mitigate the large mass required to provide the space needed for a gymnasium without dominating the site.
Using exposed gang nail wood trusses in the gymnasium continued the expression of a barn, allowing it to work with the other smaller farm style buildings on campus.
The exposed, large timber wood trusses create a striking experience upon entering while leading into the large expanse of the main gym.
A top of the line NBA grade wood floor provides for a full-court basketball court, volleyball court and support for all the necessary exercises to promote healthy students.
